"Raaaaving"

Susan Yates
April 24, 2008

Now unless you grew up in the Deep South you might not know what “raaaaving” is. Raving is going on and on about something, making over someone, praising and thanking a particular person a whole lot. In fact, some say we southerners just might overdo it a bit!

However, living out of the Deep South for the last 30 years, I’ve reflected on the inherent lesson in raving. When my children were little and I did something that pleased them and they got excited, it thrilled my mother’s heart. When my husband or colleague or friend thinks of me in a special way, it fills me with joy.

The longing for appreciation seems to be built into our nature. And yet in our busy, stressful lives it’s all too easy to take for granted—to assume—rather than to appreciate.

If being appreciated fills my heart with joy, how much more must it fill God’s heart with joy when we appreciate the things He does. I remember my mother once saying, “When we get to heaven I think God is going to ask us a question. He’s going to ask, ‘What did you think of my world? Did you enjoy it?’”

As spring bursts forth I want to notice the things God has done. A tiny bud about to burst forth, a small bunny hopping by, the first real smile that breaks forth on my new grandson’s face. I want to remember to marvel at God’s creation and to thank Him for the seemingly small things in everyday life. I don’t want to assume or take for granted. I want to rave!

I have a feeling that it thrills God when we rave to Him over what He has done. I suspect He may even clap with joy.
